Dive into Creativity: WATER Exhibit at Santa Cruz Mountains Art Center

By Blake Holiday

The Santa Cruz Mountains Art Center in Ben Lomond is making a splash with its current exhibit titled WATER: Ebb and Flow. Running through March 22, this annual judged show highlights the beauty, power, and significance of water through a collection of eclectic works by local and regional artists.

“Water is a subject that resonates deeply, touching every aspect of our lives,” said Johanna McCormick, Curatorial Director at SCMAC. “From its vital role in sustaining life to its symbolic meanings in art and culture, I think this year’s theme offers endless opportunities for exploration and interpretation. Our annual judged exhibit is one of my favorite events of the year because it always attracts a wide range of mediums and styles, from paintings and sculptures to photography and mixed media.”

This year, the exhibit invited visitors to play the role of judge by voting for their top three favorite entries that best capture this year’s theme. Awards include $200 for Best of Show, $100 for Second Place, and two $50 Honorable Mentions.

“Ben Lomond and the greater San Lorenzo Valley are steeped in natural beauty, much of it shaped by the presence of water,” says McCormick. “The exhibit theme is designed to highlight this connection, inviting locals and visitors alike to engage with the theme and reflect on the importance of water in our environment and daily lives.”

Admission is free, making it accessible to everyone who wants to experience the transformative power of art. The gallery is open to the public during regular hours Thursday through Sunday, 12 noon to 5 pm, with additional special events planned throughout the exhibition period.

The Santa Cruz Mountains Art Center has long been a hub for artists drawn to the area’s natural beauty and inspiration. Established in 1987 as a committee of the Santa Cruz Cultural Council and incorporated as a nonprofit in 1997, the Center is governed by an 11-member board of directors and offers a wide range of programs, including art classes for all ages, life drawing sessions, ceramics, and opportunities for paid teachers, interns, and volunteers. Known for its welcoming atmosphere, Art Center enriches the mountain communities with hands-on learning, art exhibits, and cultural events.
