Rosemary Chalmers and Good Morning Monterey Bay Find a New Home at KBCZ
After more than three decades as a Central Coast radio fixture, Rosemary “Rosie” Chalmers is turning the page on a new chapter. The longtime host of Good Morning Monterey Bay — most recently broadcast out of Santa Cruz Voice for the past three years — signed off from that station in February alongside broadcasting partner Bill Wolverton. But good news for listeners: Rosemary is back on the air, settling into a new home that feels like a natural fit.
Rosemary hosts morning drive time at KBCZ, 89.3 FM, Boulder Creek’s community radio station, broadcasting weekdays from 7 to 9 am and streaming live at kbcz.org. For a broadcaster who has always made community the heart of her work, the move makes perfect sense — she’s a San Lorenzo Valley resident herself, and KBCZ has been the valley’s grassroots radio voice for years. The station, which serves the mountain communities stretching from Boulder Creek to Felton and beyond, has long been a labor of love for local volunteers and community advocates who believe in the power of hyperlocal media.
Rosemary sees the partnership as something special. “It’s really the best of all worlds,” she says. “KBCZ is an important part of the San Lorenzo Valley media landscape — extremely devoted to the community it serves. And I really want to build on that, giving the San Lorenzo Valley a voice that will resonate throughout the Central Coast — from the mountains to the beach.”
KBCZ Station Manager Tina Davey agrees. “KBCZ is thrilled to welcome Good Morning Monterey Bay with host Rosemary Chalmers to our station! Rosemary is a veteran broadcaster and as she is a resident of the San Lorenzo Valley, we know she cares deeply about all of us here and will have her finger on the pulse of the Valley. Having a morning Drive-Time Show is something we have long desired and now we will have the very best!”
Loyal listeners will be relieved to know that Rosemary isn’t arriving empty-handed. Many of the familiar voices and beloved features of Good Morning Monterey Bay are making the move with her. Bill Wolverton, her current co-host, won’t be joining her in that role at KBCZ, but he’ll still be a regular presence, squaring off with Rosemary in their popular daily “Battle of the Sexes” trivia contests. The feel-good “Good News” segment that’s become a listener favorite will also carry over to the new show.
The guest lineup reads like a who’s who of Central Coast expertise and influence. Regular contributors will include Space Policy Adviser to Congress Dr. Mark Mozena, Chef Jamie Smith of MyFoodsmith.com, classic film and literature commentator Gary Shapiro, veterinarian Dr. Pete Keesling, gardening expert Charlie Keutmann, and surf reporter Rocky Snyder, owner of Capitola’s RFC. Political voices will also have a seat at the table, with Assemblymember Gail Pellerin of the 28th District, Senator John Laird of the 17th District, and Santa Cruz County Fifth District Supervisor Monica Martinez all slated as regular guests.
Rosemary acknowledges the show has a fresh feel while staying true to what listeners love. “It’s the same, but different,” she says. “I’ve always had a co-host so this brings a new twist to the show, but with all my regular guests and a few more to be added as time goes on, it will have all of the other elements that have made Good Morning Monterey Bay a mainstay in Central Coast radio.”
Whether you’re tuning in from the redwoods or the coastline, you can catch Good Morning Monterey Bay on 89.3 FM or streaming at kbcz.org.
