Celebrate the 4th of July in the San Lorenzo Valley

From pancake breakfasts to parade floats, the Santa Cruz Mountains come alive every 4th of July with traditions that run deep — some stretching back generation. Here’s your guide to celebrating Independence Day across the region this July 4th.

Boulder Creek: Where the Valley’s 4th of July Tradition Began

Boulder Creek’s celebration is one of the oldest and most beloved in the area. According to Lisa Robinson, Collections and Exhibitions Curator at the San Lorenzo Valley Museum, “The 4th of July parade is a time-honored tradition in Boulder Creek. Although at the turn of the 20th century, it was not held every year.”

“This photograph was taken in 1899, Samuel Rambo led the elaborate pageant heading south, the opposite direction from today, along an unpaved Central Avenue. Behind him was the Ben Lomond brass band followed by the lead float, driven by John Moody of Moody and Cress Livery Stables.”

“This float featured Columbia, the Goddess of Liberty portrayed by Minnie Johnson, Rambo’s niece, and over 50 schoolgirls. They were followed by the Boys Brigade of Oakland. Later that day there was a picnic, races, and a wonderful firework display that lasted three quarters of an hour.”

This Year’s 4th of July Celebrations

That spirit of community is alive and well today, kicking off early with the Boulder Creek Volunteer Fire Department Pancake Breakfast (7am–12pm, 13230 Highway 9). This annual fundraiser supports the purchase of new rescue equipment and medical supplies, with a classic spread of pancakes, eggs, sausage, fruit, coffee, and juice. Details at bcfd.com.

From there, the Boulder Creek 4th of July Parade and Street Fair takes over downtown from 10am to 2pm. Highway 9 and Forest Street close at 9am, with detours in place for motorists. It’s the heart of the day’s festivities — a classic small-town celebration that draws the whole valley together. No tickets or reservations needed — just bring your red, white, and blue spirit and enjoy a great small town tradition!

Tess Fitzgerald, president of the Boulder Creek Business Association said, “This year’s parade is going to be stellar! The entire community comes out and shares the spirit of the holiday. The BCBA is grateful for all the work of dozens of volunteers and parade participants who come together to make this event shine.”

The fun continues at Junction Park (12pm–4pm, Middleton Ave.) with the 4th of July BBQ at the Junction Park Swimming Hole hosted by the Boulder Creek Recreation and Parks District.  Enjoy food, drinks, and live music from Deep Thicket Dwellers and Sweet Sally. More at bcrpd.org.

Also in downtown Boulder Creek: While you’re on Forest Street, stop by the Native Plant Sale hosted by the Valley Women’s Club (12–3pm). Each purchase supports the Native Habitat Restoration Project and contributes to the Fred and Roberta McPherson Environmental Education Grant for Teachers and the SLV Teacher’s Art Fund. valleywomensclub.org
