Roaring Camp Works to Protect Forest and Neighboring Communities from Wildfire
Roaring Camp Railroads has been taking steps to protect its old-growth forest, and the neighborhoods that border it, from wildfire. The railroad has partnered with Boulder Creek-based Cosentino Timber Enterprises to construct shaded fuel breaks across roughly 180 acres of forestland adjacent to the Henry Cowell and Mount Hermon communities, with work expected to continue throughout 2026.
The project involves selectively thinning smaller trees and clearing dense undergrowth to slow the spread of fire and reduce flame intensity — without removing the large, healthy trees that define the forest canopy. Unlike clear-cutting, shaded fuel breaks target the ladder fuels and thick understory that allow fires to climb quickly from the ground into the treetops, while leaving the broader forest structure intact.
“Protecting both the forest and surrounding communities is our priority,” said Roaring Camp CEO Melani Clark. “Working with experienced forestry professionals like Cosentino Timber Enterprises allows us to responsibly manage vegetation while maintaining the character and health of these historic forestlands.”
The work will be conducted using best management practices to limit environmental impact, and is aimed at building long-term forest resilience by addressing hazardous fuel buildup that has accumulated over decades. For more information, visit roaringcamp.com.
