Ensure Independent Local Fire Protection in Felton

I have great respect and appreciation for our valley fire districts who consistently answer the call to serve and protect in the face of all challenges.

The issues facing Felton Fire remind me of Zayante, whose Fire District’s recent history was summarized by Jesse Kathan in a 9/25/24 Santa Cruz Local article. That year, Zayante replaced an insufficient parcel tax with Measure T as budget shortfalls had led Zayante Chief Jeff Maxwell to move from three daily paid staff to sometimes having nobody on weekends. He warned residents to “schedule your emergency carefully.” He added that a consolidated San Lorenzo Valley fire district would not necessarily be more financially sustainable, and could deprioritize smaller areas in favor of populated ones.

To prevent just this scenario, the FFPD Board voted unanimously in favor of this assessment to keep Felton Fire independent and locally controlled. They prioritized our community and firefighters.

Decades ago, leadership failed to take note of changing national trends and the status quo remained. I wish we could rely on past volunteer-only models, but we must not make critical safety decisions based on nostalgia. A well-run hybrid model with paid staff and well-supported volunteers is the only sustainable path forward.

Our board has proceeded with courage. Doing the right thing doesn’t always make you popular, but it’s still right. Vote YES on the Felton Fire Special Benefit Assessment.
