SLV Water District’s CZU Fire Surcharge Reaches Its Goal
San Lorenzo Valley Water District customers will soon see one less line item on their monthly bill.
The CZU Fire Surcharge has reached its $5 million funding goal. The District put the surcharge in place after the 2020 CZU Lightning Complex Fire to pay for rebuilding and replacing the water infrastructure the fire destroyed. Now, six years later with the goal met, the surcharge will no longer appear on monthly water bills.
Collections came in slightly above the $5 million target. Those extra funds will go back to customers as a Fire Surcharge Credit on an upcoming bill. Customers do not need to do anything to receive it. The credit will show up automatically.
“This milestone would not have been possible without the support and patience of our customers. We sincerely thank you for standing with the District and our community throughout the recovery process,” the district stated in an email.
The work itself isn’t finished. Crews are still replacing and strengthening parts of the system, and that effort will continue well past this milestone. But closing out the surcharge is a real marker of progress.
