FaceTime: Portraits from the Past at SLV Museum
A portrait exhibition titled FaceTime opened in June at the San Lorenzo Valley Museum’s Grace Episcopal Gallery in Boulder Creek. The exhibition features artwork and photographs of local residents spanning one hundred years from the 1870s to the 1970s.
Alice Hesse, featured on the exhibition flyer above, graduated from Boulder Creek High School in 1921 and from UC Berkeley in 1929. During WWII she served with the Woman’s Army Corps in Africa and Italy. The Corps was founded during the war to allow women to serve in non-combat roles.
Alice authored several books on poetry some of which are in the Museum’s collection and are on display during the exhibition.
Also, on display for the first time, is a painted portrait of William Waddell, who came to California in the early 1850s. William was a lumberman and sawmill owner. He is the namesake of Waddell Beach and Waddell Creek in Ranch Del Oso (Bear Ranch) which is now part of Big Basin Redwoods State Park.
The exhibition will also feature portraits of beloved Lily-the-Cat-Lady with works by Barbara Winner, photographic portraits by Fredda C. Carr, drawings by Historical Society founder John Holm, bubble glass portraits, daguerreotypes, family albums, and more.
The Museum has a large number of portraits in the collection, particularly in the Fredda C. Carr photograph collection (late-1940s – 1970s), that are not identified. Visitors will have the opportunity to browse these portraits in the hopes of being able to identify friends and acquaintances.
Admission is free. Exhibit runs through November 30
