Ever Changing Skies | September 2023 Welcome

By Julie Horner and Mary Andersen

September is a glorious time to enjoy living and playing in the Santa Cruz Mountains! The best of the summer warmth; sometimes a few clouds to cool things off. And the air smells sweet with the summer’s harvest and ruddy duff from deep within the forest. The last of the naked ladies (Amaryllis belladonna), blushing pink, dance among the grasses while the maples, redwoods, and oaks begin to throw down showers of leaves with each passing breeze. It is a time of collective hope that wildfire passes us by this year, as so many remember and are still navigating the rough waters of recovery from the CZU. Homeowners take advantage of brush busting and chipping programs to mitigate fire fuels. More resources are offered by FireSafe Santa Cruz.

We’re looking forward to the Santa Cruz Mountain Sol Festival at Roaring Camp in Felton this month as well as the Santa Cruz Mountains Harvest Festival at Junction Park in Boulder Creek. Apples abound at the Felton Farmers Market, and there are ample opportunities to volunteer. Friends of the Ben Lomond Library are taking action to rejuvenate the landscaping and exterior of this historic building on Mill Street, and the Valley Women’s Club hosts their River and Road Cleanup. More information about local events in our Community Calendar.

The San Lorenzo Valley Post is following San Lorenzo Valley Water District rate discussions, and we’re also watching the controversy unfolding at Felton Covered Bridge Park over a proposed bicycle pump track. Keep an eye on our website for updates: slvpost.com

Food, libation, real estate, history, music, and more. Local business, local news, local stories. Enjoy the turning of this summer season!
