Highway 9 Construction Projects to Affect Traffic Through May

Travelers on Highway 9 in the San Lorenzo Valley should expect daytime one-way reversing traffic control at multiple locations throughout the week of May 11, with some disruptions extending well beyond that.

Bridge Replacements North of Boulder Creek

The most significant ongoing work is the Highway 9 San Lorenzo River and Kings Creek Bridge Replacement Project, which involves the full replacement of two bridges north of Boulder Creek. Temporary traffic signals at both locations provide around-the-clock one-way traffic control.

Kings Creek Bridge work affects Post Miles 15.41 to 15.55, while the San Lorenzo River Bridge replacement covers Post Miles 13.58 to 13.69. During this first phase, crews will close the southbound lane to replace the southbound portion of each bridge.

Pedestrians and cyclists unable to navigate the 3-mile work zone can use a free on-call shuttle available daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Riders can be picked up at the first stop near Middleton Avenue and Highway 9 (PM 13.078) or the last stop near Seeds of Knowledge Preschool (PM 16.267).

Felton Pedestrian Safety Improvements

A separate project between the San Lorenzo Valley Schools Complex and downtown Felton is constructing a new sidewalk and bikeable shoulder on the southbound side of Highway 9. Crews will work overnight on Thursday, May 14 from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., with one-way reversing traffic control in place north of Graham Hill Road (PM 6.4 to 7.2) for communication utility trenching work.

Drainage and Erosion Control Work Near Brookdale

A third project targeting drainage and erosion problems between Brookdale and the Highway 236 junction will introduce new long-term traffic impacts beginning May 11. A temporary traffic signal activated that Monday will manage single-lane reversible traffic 24/7 from 0.21 miles north of Clear Creek Road/Pacific Street to 0.32 miles south of Irwin Way (PM 11.66). That signal is expected to remain in operation through the end of September.

Additional Utility and Tree Trimming Work

Shorter windows of traffic control for utility work and tree trimming — generally 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. — are also scheduled at several spots along the corridor:

  • May 11–15: PM 8.09 to 8.11
  • May 11–12: PM 18.25 to 18.30
  • May 12: PM R20.8 to 20.38
  • May 14: PM 5.54

Drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time and follow all posted signage through active work zones.
