Mushrooms Fall Fungi in the Santa Cruz mountainsPhotography

Fall’s Fresh Fungi | Photos

Fresh fungi push through fallen leaves in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Some edible, some not — recent rains coax their emergence. Another storm system is making its way toward the Central Coast this week with up to an inch of measurable precipitation expected in the mountains. A damp Tuesday evening ushers in a wet Wednesday.

Forage Smart

  • Never eat a mushroom without 100 % positive ID.
  • Use the free iNaturalist app for crowd-sourced confirmation.
  • Cut, don’t pull — leave the mycelium intact.
  • Carry a mesh bag; spores drop through and reseed the forest.
