3rd Annual Friends of Kelly Memorial Golf Tournament
Gathering Honors Golfer and Philanthropist Dan Kelly
By Julie Horner
Hosted by the Boulder Creek Men’s Golf Club, Friends of Kelly Memorial Golf Tournament is a four-person scramble and will be played on Monday, October 7th at the Boulder Creek Golf and Country Club in Boulder Creek, California. Now in its third year, it has expanded in scope. Club member Bruce Johnson said, “The first one had 40 some participants and we golfed at DelaVega. This year it will be around 100 golfers and we will play at the Boulder Creek Golf Course. Due to the fire at the golf course in 2020 the course is only 9 holes, so to make this happen we will have a group of about 50 players tee off at 8:00 am and go around the course twice to get in 18 holes, followed by another group of 50 going off at 1:00 pm. “
A longtime resident of Boulder Creek, Dan Kelly was known for his energetic fundraising efforts in support of Valley Churches and San Lorenzo Valley High School. A fund drive that Kelly spearheaded in the spring of 2020 raised over $110,000, which was distributed among high school sports programs, scholarships to community college, and the Valley Churches annual backpack drive and food pantry and emergency relief services. Dan and his wife Rochelle lost their home in the CZU fire. In March of 2022, Dan lost his battle with cancer.
This year the event will be followed by dinner at Scopazzi’s. Scopazzi’s is usually closed on Mondays but they will open to provide dinner to support the event. At the dinner there will also be live and silent auctions with all the monies raised going to Valley Churches.
Organizer Geoff Nelson wrote in an invitation to golf club members, “In honor of Mr. Kelly, this year I chose to replicate the Scarborough Tournament to the best of my ability. We are once again taking over the Boulder Creek Golf Course. This time we have the course to ourselves all day long as we have two different shotgun starts, 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. As always, we will be playing the front 9 twice. There will be (4) hole-in-one contests, (2) long drive and closest to the pin, and a putting competition before the shotgun start. We will also be taking over Scopazzi’s. Prime Rib will be on the menu, along with Cedar-Planked Salmon and Chicken Sauté Sec with Mushrooms. Caesar Salad and dessert are both included with dinner, which is included in your entry fee. Dinner is at 6pm. Doors open at 5pm. There will be a silent auction, a live auction, and two separate 50/50 raffles. You may purchase dinner only tickets for non-golfers. “
This tournament is open to the first 104 players who register for a spot. Members of the public can sponsor a hole along the course. All proceeds will benefit Valley Churches and you will get your name on a sign placed on the tee box of the hole as well as the “Thank you to our sponsors” sign.
