SUMMARY:Santa Cruz World Dance Showcase 2023
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Santa Cruz World Dance Showcase \nSat 8/5/23 02:00 pm to 09:00 pm \nPark Hall 9400 Mill St Ben Lomond CA \nTicket info\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/santa-cruz-world-dance-showcase-tickets-648306120057 \nIn advance: Adults tickets $15 | Children/Seniors $10 | At the door cash only: $20 suggested\, sliding scale \nFarMedia Productions presents Santa Cruz World Dance Showcase\, which is a dance-centric community event. It is run by dancers\, for dancers. And anyone interested in dance\, of course! \nThis event starts with a free daytime marketplace bazaar from 2-5:30pm\, with socializing and dance performances in the hall. Snacks and drinks will be available on a donation basis\, and Ben Lomond Super is nearby. \nOur showcase runs from 6 to 9pm. This ticketed show will be presented on the main stage\, and presents a diverse range of dance styles\, age groups\, and communities. \nA brief history\nIt all started in spring of 2022 when a group of dancers approached Daev Roehr and said “Hey\, you need to put on a show so we have a space to dance!” Daev\, who has been photographing dance events for years\, said he would do it as long as three conditions were met: First\, they all had to volunteer to help him make the vision a reality.\nSecond\, he wanted the event to be fiscally feasible by first breaking even\, and then follow the model of Santa Cruz Shakespeare and become forward funded.\nThird\, he wanted the event to have a “hook”\, that certain something makes it stand out from other dance events. That hook is all-inclusiveness. \nWe have been reaching out to dance schools\, dance clubs\, and under-represented communities\, inviting them to participate. And since he’s not a dancer\, we have reached out to other dancers to create a “dance community advisors board”. The goal is to foster a safe place to perform\, engage with other dancers\, and build community among the diverse group of dancers. Some of the groups we contacted were already booked for this year but are interested in joining us in the future. We plan to grow this showcase into an ongoing event that features a range of dance styles featuring performers in Santa Cruz and nearby areas. \nFarMedia Productions is producing this event as a gift to the dance community and is providing the “seed money” to start it up. All income from vendor table spaces\, program ads\, ticket sales\, and donations goes to covering the basic event costs. If we’re lucky and have great community support\, we’ll blow past that goal and achieve forward funding for next year’s event and some “wish list” items. With that in mind\, ticket prices are offered as a suggested amount. If you’re tight for funds\, just donate what you can afford.

New staffing\, several new Trustees and with a vision to increase community involvement\, the hall is hosting a gala fundraiser August 12\, 2023. Internationally celebrated and Grammy-nominated artist Andre Thierry\, who previously performed for a packed Park Hall in 2019\, will be returning for another night of revelry featuring the zydeco and accordion soul music he is so famous for. Thierry’s Louisiana roots effervesce the lively atmosphere he creates – be prepared to show up with your dancing feet. Inaugurating the evening are local faves\, Moonshine Crossroads. Described as “Rollicking Americana Music”\, anticipate everything from jazz standards and doo-wop classics to outlaw country and classic rock. With strong vocal harmonies\, vibrant electric guitar\, and tin-kazoo solos\, their eclectic repertoire is sure to include “your” song and we promise to get your toes tapping. \nPark Hall in Ben Lomond has been serving the community and greater SLV area for 100 years and   believes this celebration is the perfect opportunity to reintroduce ourselves to our valley neighbors.  We especially invite our Ben Lomond resident Hall “owners” to drop by and say “Hello”\, meet neighbors\, participate in the music and song and support our irreplaceable treasure. While it is our goal is to preserve our historic building\, our overriding purpose is to  be a welcoming resource for the community. \nFor over 40 years\, Park Hall has been the home of both Mountain Community Theater (MCT) and Little People’s Repertory Theater (LPRT).  Before these companies joined us\, Park Hall hosted Redwood Repertory Theater and countless dances\, costume balls\, concerts. lectures\, classes\, civic meetings\, trainings\, birthday and anniversary parties which have delighted our community over many decades. \n“After a long intermission due to covid\, it’s time to throw open our doors and honor the memories created here” says hall manager\, Surreyya Hada.  The proceeds from this event will be dedicated to immediate repairs and long term upgrades to the building and updates its audiovisual equipment\, both which are desperately needed. \n“For 100+ years Park Hall has been the public community center in the heart of the San Lorenzo Valley. Community is only hard to find if you stay at home. Instead\, come down\, listen to great music\, dance\, meet your neighbors\, and celebrate our wonderful historic Hall.” Lyle Troxell\, Trustee \nFood and Libations available for purchase \nAll ages welcome

SUMMARY:Michael Manring\, Paul Hanson\, and Michael Gulezian
DESCRIPTION:World’s leading fretless bassist\, World’s leading jazz bassoonist\, Acoustic guitar legend – an acoustic\, world\, jazz\, funk\, rock\, classical wonderland!\n\nSun. Aug. 13 at 4pm $20 adv./$25 door \nTickets: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/michael-manring-paul-hanson-michael-gulezian-tickets-681117068487\n \nMichael Manring:  Hailed by many as the world’s leading solo bassist\, Michael Manring  has been pushing back the boundaries of what’s possible on the bass guitar for decades. While his technical skill and innovations always make an impression\, it is his ability to communicate on a profound emotional level that most touches listeners. As editor Tom Darter wrote in Keyboard magazine after seeing one of Michael’s solo concerts\, “Forget his astounding technique and musicality; forget his absolute command of his instruments; forget how seamlessly the musical ideas and the performance of them were wedded together…The enlightenment came most from feeling (seeing\, hearing) the joy Michael felt to be playing…his brand of transcendental chops and musical understanding…was all in the service of the final outcome\, the joy of making music.” \n\nBuilding on the conceptions of his teacher\, the late bass legend Jaco Pastorius\, Michael has developed an approach to the instrument that includes unorthodox tunings\, techniques and methodologies. He has honed his skills on hundreds of recordings as a session musician and thousands of concerts throughout the world in venues including Carnegie Hall in New York\, Yamaha Hall in Tokyo and Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco. \n\nHis long-term collaboration and close friendship with the late acoustic guitar genius Michael Hedges led to a lengthy stint as house bassist for Windham Hill Records; a label for whom he also worked as a solo artist\, releasing four recordings under his own name: Unusual Weather (1986)\, Toward the Center of the Night (1989)\, Drastic Measures (1991) and Thonk (1994).\n \nPaul Hanson: Stunningly innovative and entertaining bassoonist playing electric and acoustic\, jazz\, funk\, rock\, world\, classical\, and more.\n\n“Hanson has brought the double reed instrument into areas where it’s seldom\, if ever\, gone before\, combining a commanding improvisational sensibility with funk\, classical and world music influences.”  – Andrew Gilbert\, DOWNBEAT Magazine\n\n“Paul Hanson\, whose playing on the bassoon\, surely the blackest sheep of jazz instruments\, is exuberant\, playful\, energetic and joyous\, and it has to be said quite breathtaking.”- Ian Patterson\, allaboutjazz.com\n“What Paul Hanson does on bassoon is akin to what other innovators like guitarists Charlie Hunter and Stanley Jordan\, banjoist Bela Fleck and bassist Jaco Pastorius have done with their respective instruments.”- Bill Milkowski\, Jazz Times\n \nMichael Gulezian (gu-LAY-ze-in) is one of the most highly acclaimed solo acoustic instrumental guitarists of our time. He’s a phenomenal technical guitarist with the rare ability to transcend his own virtuosity\, creating music that touches and moves people at the deepest level. Fred Kraus\, of Minor 7th.com wrote that Gulezian “might be the most accomplished pure guitarist on the planet.” He’s been called the musical link between John Fahey and Michael Hedges. Artists as diverse as Michael Hedges\, Willy Porter\, and Henry Kaiser have claimed him as a primary musical influence; young lions such as Erik Mongrain\, Andy McKee\, and Trevor Gordon Hall are quick to acknowledge him as an inspiration. In concert\, Michael is all warmth and humor … and though it’s visually breathtaking to watch him perform\, a concert with Michael is more than a display of cutting-edge virtuosity – it is the passionate communion of master musician engaged with his audience in the mystery of self-revelation\, creating music of atmospheric power\, ecstatic joy\, and haunting beauty. Michael has an online audience at Pandora of 15\,000 monthly listeners\, and 10 million cumulative streams. If you enjoy the artistry of musicians such as Leo Kottke and Michael Hedges – guitarists who not only amaze technically but also touch the soul – then you will love Michael Gulezian.\n\nArtist sights and sounds:  https://manthing.com/home\nhttps://www.paulhansonmusic.com/music\nhttps://www.timbrelinemusic.com\n\nPurchase your tickets now:  https://www.eventbrite.com/e/michael-manring-paul-hanson-michael-gulezian-tickets-681117068487
