SUMMARY:An Evening With Historian Sandy Lydon
DESCRIPTION:Leadership Santa Cruz County (LSCC) is pleased to announce a special event with notable local historian Sandy Lydon.\nThe public is invited to attend and hear Lydon give a first-ever\, one-time-only presentation titled\, “You Can’t Hide! Learning to Hear the History and Landscape of Calamity Cruz County.”\n\n\nLydon has been wandering the corridors of the county for the past 50 years and will provide historical perspectives to help people navigate living in Santa Cruz County in 2023 and beyond. In one of his trademarked\, arm-waving\, illustrated talks\, he will attempt to resolve some of the Big Puzzlements for newcomers and long-timers alike that makes our county what it is. What is Calamity Cruz? Why do we call it South County when it’s not? These are just a couple of the questions Lydon will provide insight and historical perspective into.\n\n\nDescribed by many as Central California’s pre-eminent “standup historian\,” Lydon is an award-winning author\, teacher and historian\, as well as a retired faculty member from Cabrillo College where he taught from 1968 to 2022. He is a leading expert on Santa Cruz County history and has researched and written widely on the rich immigration history of the Monterey Bay Region.

SUMMARY:ALO's Halloweekend Haunt
DESCRIPTION:Halloween Party at Felton Music Hall with Animal Liberation Orchestra (ALO) with Shira Elias (of Cool Cool Cool) at Felton Music Hall. Dress in your best!\n\n21+\nDoors 7pm/ Show 8pm\nTickets $30/35\nTickets: https://tixr.com/e/77115\n\nALO is a lot of things. Put simply\, it’s a rock band\, a family\, an artistic outlet\, a community\, a business. But that only scratches the surface of this 3O-year musical vision-quest. ALO is an adventure\, it’s a Spring break road trip to Colorado\, it’s an all-night drive from Salt Lake City to San Jose. It’s the comfort of hanging out with life-long friends\, of relaxing on a couch and finding treasures hidden in its cushions. It’s a coffee table full of amazing books on art\, philosophy and music. It feels old and new\, fresh and classic. It holds tension and dreams and possibility in its folds. It hopes to unveil something magical\, something unheard of\, something the world needs. It smells of super burritos and vans full of lemons\, old bongs and epic hikes. It’s a sound of growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area. It’s a sound of northern California\, with sprinkles of Santa Barbara and Augusta\, Georgia. It was born of childhood friendships\, of shared destinies\, of inside jokes and of a desire to make people happy. It’s not for everyone\, although it tries to be. It wants you to love and share in its vision. It’s long and meandering\, then suddenly sharp\, abrupt! It’s feral and clever\, and it means you no harm. It’s love and freedom\, collected and catalogued\, then released back into the wilds from whence it came\, over and over again. It’s an orchestrated liberation of our animal soul.

SUMMARY:The Stinkfoot Orchestra Tribute to Frank Zappa Halloween Extravaganza
DESCRIPTION:Mountain Music Productions presents The Stinkfoot Orchestra at the Santa Cruz Veterans Hall on Friday\, October 27 from 8:00 to 11:00 pm. \nThe Stinkfoot Orchestra pulls no punches – delivering two sets of Frank’s music via a 15-piece ensemble which incorporates a six-piece horn section\, tuned percussion\, and five vocalists. \nTickets are $25 in advance/ $30 at the door on-line ticket sales end at 12:00pm PST on October 27 2023. Tickets on Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-stinkfoot-orchestra-tribute-to-frank-zappa-tickets-687057265777 \nFounded in 2019 by Nick Chargin – a 35-year veteran of the SF Bay Area music scene\, the Stinkfoot Orchestra spent the pandemic honing their craft and are finally bringing the fruits of their labor to the stage. And\, with the iconic voices of Zappa alumni leading the charge\, the band leaves even the most critical Zappa fan pining for more. This will be a special show featuring Ray White. \nRay first joined Frank’s touring ensemble in late 1976 on rhythm guitar and vocals. While being a talented guitarist in his own rite\, Ray was primarily brought on board for his strong vocal abilities – and he wasted no time in cementing his place in Zappa history with his performance on the 1978 release\, Live in New York. He continued to tour with Frank through 1984 and his unmistakable tenor voice was featured on no less than 15 albums released while Frank was still alive as well as countless posthumous releases. \nRay continued to stay busy with several other projects following Frank’s passing including the critically acclaimed Bay Area-based band KVHW (which featured the great Steve Kimmock on guitar)\, Don’t Push the Clown and he has also worked with several other jam bands including Umphrey’s McGee. \nRay joined Dweezil on tour with Zappa Plays Zappa in 2007 and has played a major role in multiple Zappa alumni projects including Band From Utopia and\, most recently\, the Zappa Band. \nTickets are $25 in advance/ $30 at the door on-line ticket sales end at 12:00pm PST on October 27 2023.
