SUMMARY:Alison Brown Quintet at Kuumbwa Jazz
DESCRIPTION:GRAMMY winning banjo player Alison Brown and her band perform in intimate concert at Kuumbwa Jazz Center on Thursday\, June 13 at 7:00 pm. Don’t miss this captivating show!\n\n$31.50 Advance | $36.75 Door$18.50 Students\nTickets: https://www.kuumbwajazz.org/calendar/alison-brown-quintet\n\nAcoustic instrumental music has never been so beautifully represented as by Alison Brown. As one of the most multi-faceted minds on today’s roots music scene\, every one of Alison’s endeavors is marked by innovation\, intelligence\, and grace. She throws out the textbook when it comes to playing the banjo and the result is a sound that blends the rugged drive of bluegrass with the harmonic sensibilities of jazz\, earning vast acclaim and a GRAMMY award in the process.\n\nAlison took an unusual path to becoming an internationally recognized banjoist. After completing her undergraduate studies at Harvard University and receiving an MBA from UCLA\, she pursued a career in investment banking. But she missed the bluegrass music she’d grown up playing in Southern California so much that when Alison Krauss called looking for a banjo player\, she made the decision to give up her Wall Street career to pursue music. She toured with Alison Krauss and Union Station\, and Michelle Shocked before forming her own group\, The Alison Brown Quartet\, in 1993.\n\nAlison has recorded 12 critically-acclaimed solo albums\, received a GRAMMY and multiple GRAMMY- nominations. She has also received the USA Artists Fellowship in Music and a Distinguished Achievement Award from the International Bluegrass Music Association. Alison has been featured on CBS Sunday Morning\, NPR’s All Things Considered and in the pages of the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times among many other publications.\n\nAlison is also the co-founder of the internationally recognized roots music label Compass Records Group which Billboard Magazine has called “one of the greatest independent labels of the last decade.” Compass Records Group oversees a catalog of nearly 1\,000 releases across multiple label imprints\, including Red House Records\, Green Linnet and Mulligan Records. Alison currently serves on the Board of the Nashville Chapter of the Recording Academy\, on the adjunct faculty of Vanderbilt’s Blair School of Music and as co-chair of the Steve Martin Banjo Prize.

SUMMARY:Amateur Radio Field Day Event
DESCRIPTION:Local Amateur Radio Clubs Test Their Skills \nEvery 4th weekend in June thousands of amateur radio (ham radio) operators throughout North America participate in Field Day\, an event where licensed volunteer radio operators set up temporary transmitting stations to demonstrate how communities can stay connected in cases of emergency when power is out and landlines and cell phones are inoperable. This year Field Day takes place Friday through Sunday\, June 21st through the 23rd. The public is welcome to a free day-long educational open house on Saturday\, June 22 held in the former Par 3 golf course behind Seacliff Inn at 7500 Old Dominion Ct\, Aptos. Check out amateur “hams” using an array of radio equipment to contact fellow hams locally and across the nation. \nThe event is co-hosted by the Santa Cruz County Amateur Radio Club and the San Lorenzo Valley ARC. According to The National Association for Ameteur Radio\, with which both clubs are affiliated\, Field Day has been an annual event nationally since 1933. The objective of Field Day is “to contact as many stations as possible on the 160-\, 80-\, 40-\, 20-\,15- and 10-Meter HF bands\, as well as all bands 50 MHz and above\, and to learn to operate in abnormal situations in less than optimal conditions.” Beyond the hobbyist\, some train to join the Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) and register their ham setups with emergency agencies to be part of crucial communication networks in times of disaster. SUMMARY:Tomato Jam Workshop & Wine
DESCRIPTION:The Tomato harvest is coming in and we will show you how to make some delicious tomato jam – sometimes called “ketchup for grownups” – that you can use in your late summer recipes and all through the coming year. We will teach you basic best practices for canning so you can get started on preserving your own harvests with this quick and simple recipe using hot water bath canning. This hands-on workshop will send you home with tips for safe and successful canning and recommended tools – and finished jam\, too! \nNew to waterbath canning? This workshop is for you! We will bring in the sweet garden tomato harvest and learn a simple canning process for Tomato Jam following USDA guidelines for safety. Suggested equipment and guidebooks will be discussed so you can start on your own canning journey with confidence! All participants will take home a jar or two of goodies from the workshop. A light lunch from the Cottage Kitchen as well as a glass of wine will be provided to accompany our time. \n  \nTickets: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/tomato-jam-workshop-wine-tickets-937897405387
