Decades later\, the Grammy Award-winning San Jose native’s voice and performance is as strong as ever. Still boasting a 4-octave range\, Brock’s voice brings an immediate sense of familiarity to the music of the Stinkfoot Orchestra.\n\n\nEmploying a 6-piece horn section\, tuned percussion\, and 4 vocalists\, this ensemble pulls no punches – delivering the intricacies and eccentricities of Frank’s music with power\, authenticity\, and musical prowess. Founded by 35-year veteran of the South Bay music scene\, Nick Chargin\, the Stinkfoot Orchestra spent most of the pandemic honing their craft and transcribing horn charts – finally bringing their show to the stage in September of 2021. Bolstered by a few articles that brought international attention\, 2022 saw the band hit the road with multiple trips to the Pacific Northwest – exposing new audiences to Zappa’s music and wowing existing Zappaphiles with a huge sound that harkens back to Zappa’s (final) 1988 touring ensemble.\n\nMountain Music Productions along with the Veterans Memorial Hall are proud to welcome SFO back to Santa Cruz for the First Friday Concert Series. DESCRIPTION:Jean Rohe writes one-of-a-kind narrative songs\, concerned as much with the interior lives of her narrators as with the wider world outside them. Jean recently won the 2022 Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk songwriting contest with her deeply personal and timely song “Animal”. Her latest full-length record as a bandleader\, Sisterly\, produced by longtime collaborator Liam Robinson\, won best Adult Contemporary Album at the Independent Music Awards in 2019.\n\nA prolific songwriter\, Jean is perhaps best known for her video single\, “National Anthem: Arise! Arise!” an aspirational alternative national anthem performed live with brass ensemble and choir\, which has now been covered hundreds of times by soloists and choirs across the US. Her co-write with Liam Robinson\, “The Longest Winter” was featured on the 2020 Hadestown cast holiday album. Her award-winning 2013 debut release\, Jean Rohe & The End of the World Show\, was hailed by an Elmore Magazine reviewer as “enchanting” and “remarkable in so many ways I can think of no comparison.”\nHer writing and performance styles are the product of 20 years of experimentation and practice\, learning on her feet as a side-person and bandleader in New York’s wide-ranging music communities. “I grew up in a household where music-making and storytelling––far from a rarified vocation for prodigies and professionals––was an act woven into the social life of our family and friends\, ” she says. “I carry that spirit with me into the music I make today.”\n\nJean tours internationally as a soloist\, bandleader\, and with Robinson & Rohe\, her rootsy songwriting duo\, but she is also a devoted songwriting mentor\, working with adult writers and youth alike to foster a love of the writing process. For nearly a decade she has been an artist in Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute\, creating lullabies with incarcerated parents on Rikers Island through the Lullaby Project and mentoring songwriters through Musical Connections at Sing Sing Prison. She offers private and group songwriting lessons periodically through the year\, and recently joined the part time faculty at The New School Jazz and Contemporary Music Program teaching songwriting.\n\nUpcoming projects include the release of Into the Night (Robinson & Rohe)\, a new collaborative album with The Landliners (Charlie Burnham\, Skye Steele\, and Rashaan Carter)\, and 74 Corridor\, a new song cycle (2022 Brooklyn Arts Council grant recipient). She also continues work on The Odysseus Agreement\, for which she’s received fellowships from MacDowell\, the Johnny Mercer Songwriters Project\, and others. It feels familiar\, but at the same time unchartered. His songs sound bluesy but not blues\, folk but not folk\, soulful but not soul. Marty’s voice is beautiful and unique\, his lyrics stark yet lush over gritty electrified guitar\, melding beautifully into genre-defying music within the vast definitions of Americana. One can hear an urgency and complexity in the songs\, expressing something elemental and perhaps contradictory: love and anger\, joy and pain\, real and imagined.\n\nThe live performance is at the core of Marty’s projects. On stage\, whether accompanied by a band\, or alone\, he enters a trance and the music is born again as something new every night. It’s what his followers call “magic”. He goes from raw gospel blues to cinematic epics\, from heavy driving grooves to delicately arranged folk songs. Marty leaves the stage out of breath and sweaty\, his audience in awe. It’s hard to describe\, impossible to categorize. Yet people who know the music will try to explain it to you\, just as you might struggle to explain a dream in the morning. The details might slip away as you recount them\, but the feeling remains.\n\nQUINN DEVEAUX\nThe origin story is almost too good to be true. A teenaged Quinn DeVeaux\, raised on a healthy diet of his mom’s 80s R&B favorites and dad’s classic rock leanings\, left his hometown of Gary\, Indiana\, and was driving across the country when he really heard Muddy Waters for the first time. He recalls\, “I couldn’t believe it. Didn’t seem real – that bone-raw emotion.”\n\nAfter playing in a number of configurations that explored all corners of his musical passion\, Quinn DeVeaux assembled his Blue Beat Review\, which merged his diverse tastes into a rollicking itinerant house party\, demolishing venues and releasing several acclaimed records featuring Quinn’s ever-swelling writing and performing skills.\n\nPausing briefly to work with old SF friends and bandmates The California Honeydrops on a stellar 2022 single\, “Take You Back” / “Very Best Thang”\, found Quinn building on Book of Soul’s momentum and marked a particularly prolific period in his songwriting\, seemingly plucking from the air a wide variety of songs.
