A musical Swiss army knife\, she handles a variety of styles with ease\, sliding gracefully from Hawaiian to swing\, from R&B and rock\, from blues to jazz and back again. SUMMARY:China Cats Winter Dance Party
DESCRIPTION:Mountain Music Productions and the Santa Cruz County Veterans Hall present the China Cats Winter Dance Party at the Vets Hall in downtown Santa Cruz on Saturday\, January 27 at 7:00 pm.\n\nTix $20 Advance: https://bit.ly/ChinaCatsWinterDance\n\nThe Bay Area’s longest-running tribute to the Grateful Dead\, the China Cats have been burning up stages with the same band members since 2012. That consistency shows in the band’s ability to turn on a dime\, pull out hundreds of different Grateful Dead songs\, and deliver that sense of adventure that Dead fans covet. Tight but loose; loose but tight.\n\nThe band has performed throughout North America headlining concert halls and festivals including an annual spot at the Skull & Roses Festival in Ventura\, CA. Lead guitarist Matt Hartle is well known through his regular Grateful Sunday series at Felton Music Hall\, where he uses top players from the Bay Area each week. Matt also works with Joe Craven in the acoustic project Painted Mandolin. Rhythm guitarist Scott Cooper has also forged a name for himself through his performances with the China Cats and Rosebud as well as his original material. His debut CD reached #5 on the national jam band radio chart\, and his most recent release is rising on the Americana charts. Together with keyboard player Steve Sofranko (a regular with Stu Allen)\, bassist Roger Sideman\, and drummer Michael Owens\, the China Cats are well known and well loved. The band has also performed with former Dead vocalist Donna Jean Godchaux\, JGB organist Melvin Seals\, and others.\n\n“One of the premier tribute bands in Northern California. The group has spent years infusing the classic sensibilities of the Dead’s catalog with their own flair and energy” — Good Times\, Santa Cruz\n\n“The Bay Area’s leading Grateful Dead tribute band… Instead of attempting note-for-note re-enactments\, the China Cats try to re-create the spirit of the Dead with creative jam sessions. This Bay Area tribute band performs the songs of the Grateful Dead with spirited jams that carry their own genuine personality while paying homage to their musical forefathers.” — Modesto Bee

SUMMARY:Richard March with Mike Hellman
DESCRIPTION:Richard March with Mike Hellman\n\nSATURDAY 2/10/2024 8 PM / Doors at 7 PM\n$25 Advance / $30 at the door\nTix: eventbrite.com/e/richard-march-with-mike-hellman-live-at-lille-aeske-arthouse-tickets-793113081577\nAbout Richard March\nAs a songwriter/storyteller\, March is a modern day throwback to the melodic\, progressive country music stars of several decades ago when folks like Mickey Newbury\, Kris Kristofferson and Glen Campbell were regularly heard on radio and seen on evening television. March’s live performance skills have garnered him opening positions for Johnny Cash’s legendary backing band the Tennessee Three\, folk icon Ramblin’ Jack Elliott\, the popular Steve Forbert\, bluesmen Nick Gravenites and John Hammond\, Straycat Lee Rocker and western soul cult heroes the Hacienda Brothers.\nRichard is a Sacramento Area Music Award (SAMMIE) winner for Outstanding Male Vocalist\, received a Best of Sacramento award from Sacramento Magazine for best local Americana artist\, and was awarded Best Locally Produced Album in the Sacramento News and Review’s 2007 “Best of” issue. Richard can be heard on NPR’s Blue Dog Jams and has been heard on Air America as well as other various outlets in California and Oregon\, has made several local television appearances\, and is considered to be at the forefront of the Americana scene in the Sacramento area.\nAbout Mike Hellman\nMike Hellman is a country and americana troubadour with a bent for the unconventional. Slinging songs with substance\, conviction and grit\, he’s on a mission to tell his truth and he insists on being heard. While firmly rooted in the rich country and blues traditions of his home state of Texas\, he refuses to pander to cliché and his sound is anything but predictable. His lively performances swing from ballad to barn burner to outright rock ‘n’ roll\, and his rich baritone conjures earnestness and humor while dealing head-on with all aspects of the human condition (and with a not-so-subtle nod to the underdog). An “outlaw” for outlaws\, Mike’s music transcends the often narrow boundaries set by the mainstream country music establishment.\n\nMike released three singles in 2021-22\, which have enjoyed enthusiastic reception on Gimme Country\, NPR\, Pacifica and independent radio stations across the United States and Europe. His debut full length album “Trials and Triumphs” is expected in 2023\, and he plans to tour extensively to support the release.
