SUMMARY:Frankie Gavin and Catherine McHugh in Concert
DESCRIPTION:Galway\, Ireland fiddle player Frankie Gavin performs with pianist Catherine McHugh at Scott Kennedy Hall at the Resource Center for Nonviolence\, 612 Ocean St. Santa Cruz. The pair will be playing music from their recently released 18-track album Port Eireann. Wednesday\, November 15 | 6:30 to 9:30\n\nTickets $20 Advanced | $25 Door\nhttps://big-trees-productions.ticketleap.com/frankie-gavin-santa-cruz\n\nThis performance celebrates Frankie’s long awaited return to the stage and highlights his most recent recording\, Port Eireann\, which includes legendary uplifting traditional melodies as well as Frankie’s own compositions\, including The Burren Barn Dance.\n\nThe Journal of Music writes that Frankie comes from a musical family: “His father\, mother and family all played Irish Music. He started playing the tin whistle at age four\, making his first T.V. appearance three years later. At the age of ten years old Frankie began to play fiddle and at the age of seventeen he placed first in the All Ireland Fiddle Competition and in the All Ireland Flute Competition\, both on the same day. Mainly learning by ear\, he was strongly influenced by the 78 recordings of Michael Coleman and James Morrison. Sessions in the Cellar Bar\, Galway and later in Hughes’ pub in Spiddal led to the formation of De Dannan in 1973.\n\nFrankie has recorded 16 albums with De Dannan as well as a number of solo albums\, and three collaborations: one a tribute to Joe Cooley entitled ‘Omos do Joe Cooley’ with Paul Brock; a fine collaboration with fellow De Dannan member Alec Finn; and one with Stephane Grapelli exploring the languages of jazz and traditional music. He has also guested with The Rolling Stones on their Voodoo Lounge album\, with Keith Richards on ‘Wingless Angels’ and with Earl Scruggs the great banjo man.”\nAccording to West Cork Music\, “Catherine (Kate) McHugh is one of the most outstanding young accompanists in Irish traditional music today. Growing up in an area steeped in legends of Irish traditional music\, Catherine has listened to and played with many of the outstanding East Galway musicians. Her approach to piano accompaniment\, heavily influenced by legends of the piano\, is far beyond her years with a unique understanding of the music she performs. Catherine is in high demand as an accompanist and has performed at many festivals and concerts nationally and internationally.”\n\nArtist sights and sounds:\n\nFrankie Gavin and Catherine McHugh at the Empire\, Belfast Tradfest February 2023. SUMMARY:China Cats Holiday Bash
DESCRIPTION:Ho ho ho!! It’s time for the China Cats’ awesome annual Holiday Bash at the Santa Cruz Veterans Memorial Hall on Saturday\, December 2\, 2023 from 7:30 to 10:30 pm! \nTickets: Advance $20 | Door $25\nhttps://bit.ly/ChinaCatsHolidayBash \nThe China Cats are the Bay area’s premiere Grateful Dead Tribute band\, performing with the same lineup of players for more than 10 years. They competently play over 200 songs the Grateful Dead performed during their career and have a large mobile fan base. The China Cats have headlined at the Redwood Mountain Faire (Santa Cruz\, CA)\, performed at the Skull and Roses Festival (Ventura\, CA)\, Enchanted Forest Festival \, Grateful Dead Archives (UCSC Santa Cruz) Hog Farm picnic\, as well as many popular venues such as Terrapin Crossroads (san Rafael)\, Sweetwater Music Hall (Mill Valley) The Catalyst (Santa Cruz)\, Swabbie’s (Sacramento) Crystal Bay Casino (Lake Tahoe) Club Fox (Redwood City) The Ashkenaz (Berkeley) and many others. \nHere’s what the press has to say: \n“What makes these cats different? For starters\, they seem to have more than the usual allotted nine lives. This improvisational partnership between the same five members has been delighting ‘deadicated’ dancers and toe-tappers alike for over a decade. Matt Hartle shreds on lead guitar\, adding soulful vocals that conjure the lofty\, lilting\, bone-tingling notes of the late\, great Jerry Garcia. Mike Owens artfully beats a primal drum\, forming the foundation upon which towers of music can be built. Roger Sideman holds down a steady driving bass line with the determination of someone totally committed to the music. Scott Cooper keeps time and everybody spinning with his rhythm guitar and vocals. Steven Sofranko embellishes all the other instrumentation with his improvisational and whimsical prowess on the keys. It’s never just another show\, it’s a pulsating\, undulating\, melodic\, dramatic\, ecstatic\, jubilee!” – San Lorenzo Valley Post\, Santa Cruz Mountains \n“One of the premier tribute bands in Northern California. The group has spent years infusing the classic sensibilities of the Dead’s catalog with their own flair and energy” – Good Times\, Santa Cruz\n“The China Cats aren’t a cover band\,” says Nicholas Meriwether\, archivist of the Grateful Dead collection at UC Santa Cruz. “They approach the Dead’s work with the same kind of reverence and sophistication that the Dead themselves showed in their own forays into American roots music. “When you listen to the Cats\,” Meriweather adds\, “old favorites take on new lives\, revealing facets that will delight and amaze even jaded listeners. These guys aren’t copycats — their sets demonstrate how the Dead’s music now is a part of the great American songbook\, alongside the giants who first inspired the Dead.” \nArtist sights and sounds:\nwww.thechinacats.com\nFB @thechinacats

SUMMARY:Krampus Fest
DESCRIPTION:Calling all naughty girls and boys! Celebrate Krampusnacht at the Historic Brookdale Lodge on Tuesday\, December 5 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. This is a parade and pagan pub crawl for those over the age of 21. \nA mythical figure in Central European and Eastern Alpine folklore\, Krampus appeared during the Advent season to strike terror into the hearts of naughty children (and adults) who were looking at getting more than just a lump of coal in their stocking. This half-goat half-human creature had a towering\, hairy body\, curved horns\, one cloven foot\, the other human\, and a snarling visage with a snake-like tongue. According to Susan Bell at the University of Southern California\, Krampus dates back to at least the Middle Ages and traditionally carried “a ruten bundle\, or birch rod\, to whip those who have misbehaved and chains to bind those who have strayed from the straight and narrow.” \nSounds positively pagan! Wear your horns\, your fur\, your utterly earthy Gothy best and join the well behaved – and not so well behaved – in a lively evening of ceremonial goblet emptying on the traditional day when St. Nicholas and Krampus convened in the homes of the villagers to sort the naughty from the nice. \nThis festival is the brainchild of local Santa Cruz Mountains’ Lisa Rosato and Janel Greenland. Janel said that she and Lisa were a little sad that Halloween was over\, so they decided to create Krampus Fest for everyone who would love an opportunity to dress up and delve into the mythical pagan roots of this spiritual season. \nNo cover.
